THE recent performances of Tilly Spinney since the start of the new year suggest 2022 could be a good one for her.

The 17-year-old Westbury Harrier (pictured right) followed up her fourth place in the under 20 women’s age group at the South West Championships with a hard-earned fourth in the senior women’s race at the latest Gloucestershire League match at Cotswold Farm Park.

That represents a good week for the Wootton-under-Edge based youngster, who is coached by Mike Mewse.

“Tilly has been slowly and steadily improving having been with us for a few years now,” said Mewse, who also has triathlete Ben Rawlins in his group.

“She is a serious runner and was ready for an increase in the work she has been doing.”

Mewse is a great believer in not pushing an athlete too hard, too early so hopefully we’ll continue to see Spinney, who is a student at Hartpury College, improve over the coming years before she steps into the senior ranks.

For now, though, her results can only give her great encouragement and put an extra spring in her stride when training.
