TOP county in the south west at the New Balance English Schools’ Championships was Somerset with a haul of nine medals comprising two golds for Amelia Wills (inter girls steeplechase) and Jamie Schlueter (inters long jump), four silvers and three bronzes.

Avon (Jess Lewis, junior javelin), Cornwall – through 15-year-old Padstow high jumper Sam Brereton – Gloucestershire (Stroud’s Annie Testar, inter 800m) and Wiltshire (Beatrice Wood, junior 1500m) also won one gold each but Dorset went home empty-handed.
Avon also won two bronzes through Luke Ball (junior high jump) and Anna Burt (senior 800m).
