JACK Millar retained his senior men’s title in style as he led Bristol & West AC to a clean sweep at the South West Cross Country Championships, RNAS Merryfield, Ilton

The muddy conditions were certainly to Millar’s liking as he skipped clear of his clubmates Felix McGrath and Max Davis and Cheltenham’s in-form Dom James to win by 27 seconds.

“I enjoyed it,” said Millar.

“I liked the course as it is quite heavy-going in places and lots of changes in tempo. It was nice to do the double and lead the club to the team title as well.”

The clean sweep gave Bristol & West AC the perfect start and with Owain Jones 11th and Andrew Watt 19th the club retained their title by a whopping 84 points from Gloucestershire club Western Tempo with Cornwall AC third.

Leading local runner in the senior women’s race was Team Bath’s Tri-Counties champion Amber Gascoigne as the 43-year-old dug in to finish a splendid third.

“It was obviously miserable conditions, quite horrible and we suffered a heavy downpour as we stood on the start line,” said Gascoigne.

“But I’m pleased to finish third as I had had a pretty manic 24 hours and wasn’t even sure I was going to race. In hindsight I’m glad I did!”

B&W’s Katrina Entwistle finished eighth but the squad of Jessie Sanzo (16th and 3rd W35), Catie O’Donoghue (33rd) and Kat Baldwyn (58th) had to settle for fifth.

Of the other individual medallists B&W’s Ewan Sparey, who is part of the Ali Hurford coaching group, performed impressively to finish runner-up in the under 13 boys race.

He also a second silver in the club team competition with the squad of Freddie Barnes (8th), Callum Skidmore (38th), Elijah Buscemi (41st), were beaten by just three points by Wells City Harriers.

North Somerset AC’s Edward Stoate was third in the under 11 boys’ race and clubmate Samuel Holloway finished third in the under 17 men’s age group behind Team Bath’s Harry Maxwell.
