Why Jack Millar is the top West senior man this winter

THERE can be little argument that Jack Millar deserves the plaudits as the best senior men’s cross country runner in the West Country this winter.

Millar’s seventh place in the Inter Counties Championships at Loughborough yesterday was yet another impressive performance from the Bristol & West AC runner.

Subject to confirmation that run may have sealed his top three finish overall in the British Cross Challenge Series following on his 10th at Cardiff, 11th at Milton Keynes and 42nd at Liverpool before Christmas and then a superb fifth at the Northern Ireland fixture in Belfast.

Podium place: Jack Millar won a bronze medal at the Midland Cross Country Championships

In-between those events Millar, who is coached by Dave Bedwell, also notched up some impressive results in the major championships with gold at the South West and bronze at the Midland in January.

But arguably his best result of the winter was his fifth place in the Suacony English National Cross Country Championships last month.

Of course, it is a subjective opinion but looking across the South West I can’t see any other senior runner from Gloucestershire down to Cornwall who comes anywhere close to challenging Millar’s record this winter.

The best in the West?

For the 2021/22 season I would say step forward Jack Millar because it has been a terrific campaign.
