Gates & Gallagher crowned British Masters Indoor champions

THE Westbury Harriers pair of Nigel Gates and Pat Gallagher were both in gold-medal winning form at the British Masters Indoor Championships at Lee Valley, London, last weekend.

Gates (pictured above from the 2019 championships) retained the over 65s title he won a year ago on the same track with the impressive time of 10mins 26.83secs – 10 seconds slower than in 2019 but still a mighty achievement on an uncompromising surface.

Gallagher has been collecting British masters titles indoors and out for more years than most of us care to remember and she, like Gates, is a shining example of the sport they both love.

Gallagher, who also caoches at the club, may have been the only woman in the over 70s age group but that’s no reason not to applaud her victory in the 800m in a time of 3mins 55.42secs. Terrific.

I also noted that in the over 55s 1500m Bristol & West’s Tony Roper finished a respectable fifth in 4:50.98.
