Why Ellie is the west’s Queen of the Boards

Flying start: Westbury Harrier Ellie Leather has had a great start to 2022 in America

SO what an amazing year so far for Ellie Leather. Five races indoors and four personal bests, the latest of which came last weekend in the mile and 800m.

The mile is a big event on the collegiate indoor circuit in America so Leather is really making a name for herself at Cincinnati University where she is studying on a sports scholarship.

Indeed, the Westbury Harrier has written herself into the college history books having twice broken their school record for the distance on the boards this year.

Having set a new record – also a record for the Harriers and her summer track club Yate & District AC – of 4mins 36.83secs last month Leather cut another chunk off that with 4:34.89 at the Music City Challenge in Nashville last weekend.

Not content with that Leather lined up for the 800m the following day and clipped over two seconds off her PB with 2:05.32.

Add on a PB of 9:30.10 for the 3000m in the opening race of the year and it is easy to see why this is the best start to a year that Leather has ever enjoyed.

The 800m time puts Leather ninth on the UK Rankings and while there are no mile rankings on the Power of Ten website her coach Jason Michael reckons her latest time lifts the Harrier to 22nd on the UK All-Time lists for the indoor distance.

Her 3000m time also places her 11th in the current UK Rankings.

But lists or no lists they are quality times and it will be very exciting to see if Leather can carry that form into the outdoor season this summer.
