Sparey aiming for a grand finale at English Schools showdown

Champion: Ewan Sparey at the South West Schools

EWAN Sparey will be hoping to end a fantastic season when he lines up for Avon in the junior boys’ race at the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Nottingham today (SATURDAY MARCH 18th).

Sparey, who is coached by Ali Hurford at Bristol & West AC, has enjoyed a terrific winter winning the South West Schools’ title, finishing runner-up at the South West Inter-Counties and placing fourth in the English ‘National’.

On that sort of form he’ll be hoping for a top ten finish at Wollaton Park and his junior boys’ team-mates, if they pack well, could also finish well up.

In the junior girls’ race the North Somerset AC pair of Estelle Lowe and Heidi Martineau should fare well and B&W’s Gabriella Ritter Sherratt has had a good winter.

Westbury Harriers’ Laura Chance (pictured right) was seventh at the SW Schools and made he top 50 at the ‘National’ so again will be looking to end her season on a high in the inter girls’ age group.

In the senior boys’ race Team Bath’s Dylan Stoneman, who won an England Schools’ vest for the 1500m steeplechase last summer,  has the ability to figure prominently but he is bottom of the age group.

With Seamus Robinson, Sam Holloway, Ishmael Bradley and Nick Pestell in support the senior boys’ team have a chance of doing very well.

But good luck to all the young runners representing the county today. Just by qualifying you are part of an elite group of runners so that is a success in its own right. The full team is available below:
