OWAIN Jones has made a terrific start to 2016. A week after placing 14th at the British Cross Challenge in Antrim he made the shorter trip from his Bristol home to the Cardiff Cross Challenge yesterday and finished an excellent fourth in the senior men’s race.
“I am really happy with that,” said Jones.
Jones (pictured left with clubmate Charlotte Green) finished just three seconds behind Charlie Hulson in third with Swansea’s Dewi Griffiths claiming a popular victory. Griffiths, who had won in Bristol when the Challenge was held in the city, ended a 24-year wait since the last Wales runner to emerge victorious with Nicky Comerford in 1992.
In the other races Bristol & West’s Amelia Pettitt was sixth in the senior women’s race and Team Bath’s Gemma Shepherd came seventh in the under 20 women’s age group.
In the under 17 men’s race new Avon Schools’ champion Hugh Sadler finished fifth and Westbury Harriers’ Ella Brimble finished 20th in the under 17 women’s event.
Westbury’s Kate Howard was 17th in the under 13 girls race.
