McGrath suffers in the heat on the northern fells

FELIX McGrath was forced to drop out of the Alderman’s Ascent Fell race at the weekend.

The Bristol & West AC runner made the long trip north to Oldham for the English Fell Championships event, which comprised a 400m climb over 8k.

McGrath (pictured) showed up well in the early stages and was in the leading group when they reached the summit.

But the intense heat took its toll on McGrath as coach Mike Down explained.

“Felix was up with the leaders but on the steep downhill he started to have dizzy spells and fell a couple of times,” said Down.

“Ultimately he had no option but to pull out. The race started at 1pm at the hottest part of the day and a lot of people were suffering.

“Felix hates dropping out but he knew it was serious and if he hadn’t stopped he may have collapsed.

“It was the sensible decision to stop. There is always another day.”
