How Davis surged to a shock silver in English Schools’ 3000m

COACH Steve Williams has just given me some stats which underline the quality of Max Davis’ performance at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships last weekend.

Davis’ silver in the senior boys’ 3000m was arguably the biggest surprise of the weekend for the Avon squad as the Ralph Allen School, Bath, student well and truly upset the form book.

“I was just hoping to make the top ten as I was only 16th fastest in the field on paper so I’m not sure what happened, I can’t believe it!” said Davis, who smashed his PB with a time of 8mins 25.75secs.

Davis did it in some style as well as Williams revealed with the following splits; 2mins 37secs for the final 1k, 2:03 last 800m and a 59 seconds last lap.

“Steve has told me I am going to work on my speed now and try to get my PB down for 1500m!” added Davis.

“I never knew I was that quick.”
