THE 2021/22 John H Collins Gwent Cross Country league kicks off today – but Great Western Runners won’t be there.
The club decided this week wo withdraw from the league in protest again the decision not to equalise the distances run by men and women in the league programme.
In a statement issued by the club the reasons for their decision were carefully laid out and explained:
“It is with a heavy heart that we have decided for now, to boycott running at the Gwent League Cross Country races,” read the statement.
“We have discussed and voted several times as a club at AGMs etc that we would support equalising distances. Therefor we feel the next appropriate step is to show our solidarity towards the movement.
“Sorry it’s late notice but the results have only just been published. Over the next few weeks we shall seek an alternative cross country league we feel shares our club values.
“In the meantime if you still wish to participate in this week’s cross country fixture at Llandaff Fields this is absolutely fine – please make your own way there and enter yourself – the club will pay your entry fee.”
The opening fixture takes place at Llandaff Fields, Cardiff and local clubs Bristol & West AC and Westbury Harriers will still be in attendance.
