EMILY Wright has finished an excellent fourth at the World Youth Games in Colombia.
Coach Dan Cossins has always told me that Wright, a former winner of the East Runner athlete of the month competition, has the temperament for the big occasion and she proved that again by leaping to a personal best of 6.21m in the second round.
Agonisingly Wright was just one centimetre off the bronze medal won by Slovakia’s Maja Bedrac, who cleared 6.22m with her final jump of the competition to snatch away the medal from the Bristol & West athlete’s grasp.
Wright opened with 6.21m and backed that up with 6.15m and 6.00m in a superb display of long jumping that confirms her emergence as one of Britain’s best young talents.
Victory went to American Tara Davis with 6.41m, also on her sixth and last jump with Kaiza Karlen of Sweden second on 6.24m
