Ellie chasing a medal at Avon Schools’ Cross Country Championships

CANCELLED last year due to water-logged pitches it is hoped that the Avon Schools’ Cross Country Championships will get the go-ahead on Saturday.

A course inspection at the Kingswood School playing fields on Lansdown earlier this week suggest there should be no problem with the event taking place – unless the weather deteriorates considerably.

When the event was last held in 2014 Bath & North East Somerset Schools’ provided two winners in Themis Bower and Laura McNab, both in the junior age groups.

Both could again be contenders for a medal as should newly-crowned Banes champion Anna Burt. The 15-year-old EllieWallaceHayesfield School runner retained her inter girls’ title in some style as, leading from start to finish, she ran away from the field around the Kingswood venue.

Returning to the same ‘home’ venue should help Burt and while her main aim for the year remains the track a good performance for the Kevin Brunt Team Bath runner will give further proof that her winter preparations are proceeding nicely.

Ellie Wallace (pictured right second from the left with her Westbury team-mates at the South West Championships) should be another runner looking to impressive along with her Westbury Harriers’ clubmates Ellie Hobbs (pictured left) and Hannah Hobbs.

Unfortunately it was confirmed on Tuesday that the Wiltshire Cross Country Championships at Grittleton House School on Saturday have been postponed.

“Unfortunately Grittleton House School had a huge amount of rain over the weekend onto ground that was already very wet,” said organiser Tim Whiting.

“The course, general grounds and car parking areas are just now too wet to use and need a prolonged period to drain and dry out.

“This is of course very frustrating and causes a good deal of inconvenience to many people for which we are sorry.”

The event has been re-scheduled for the following week, Saturday January 23rd with a second reserve date of January 30th also pencilled in – just one week before the South West Schools’ Championships in Cheltenham.
