Battling Otto survives gruelling Alps challenge

THE Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc (UTMB) was a couple of weeks ago but Otto Karhunen deserves huge credit for completing the monster 106 miles plus race that is regarded as one of the premier ultra trail races in the world.

Karhunen, who is a member of Southville Running Club, completed the event which also includes over 10,000 metres of climbing through the Alps – more than Mt Everest – in a time of 42hours 17minutes.

As the SRC social media rightly claimed: ‘A phenomenal achievement and the culmination of years of dedication and many miles out on the trails.’

The winner of the men’s race was Spain’s trail legend Kilian Jornet in the quite staggering time of 19hrs 49mins 30secs!
