Avon sprint ace Broooks scorches to South West Schools’ double

Top of the podium: Record-breaker Toby Conibear celebrate gold in the inter boys’ hammer

AVON’S top young track and field athletes scooped a total of 44 medals at the South West Schools’ Track & Field Championships, held at the Exeter Arena.

That impressive haul included a superb 21 golds from just 18 athletes with remarkably three of Avon’s finest claiming double successes.

On the track South Glos & Stroud College (SGSC) Filton student Dan Brooks not only scorched to a senior 100m and 200m double but also recorded personal bests of 10.71secs and 21.63secs respectively, the latter the first time he has crashed through the 22 seconds barrier.

Those times put the yate & District AC sprinter, who is coached by Sandra Woodman, top of the South West Rankings for under 20 men and on the national stage 14th and 12th respectively. A fantastic achievement by Brooks in such competitive events.

There were also doubles golds for Backwell School student Emma Bakare in the senior girls’ shot and triple jump – underlining her all-round versatility – and Clifton College newcomer Joshua Schrijver in the junior boys’ shot and discus.

Brimsham Green School student Toby Conibear also deserves a special mention as he broke the championship record with a personal best throw of 63.60m to win the inter boys’ hammer.

“There is a bigger throw in me but I am saving that for the English Schools’ Championships,” said Conibeare, who is coached by Matt Spicer at Yate & District AC.

SGSC’s junior international Jenna Blundell (bottom photo) set a legal PB of 13.85secs to win the senior 100m hurdles and Abbeywood’s Jess Frazer clocked a legal PB of 58.86secs to strike gold in the senior 400m.

In the junior boys’ high jump Brimsham Green School’s current UK No 1 Luke Ball (pictured in action below)  was in imperious form as he added three centimetres to his PB with 1.93m.
