Angharad smashes personal best in Lausanne 10k

elizabethsmith-jpgI DIDN’T expect to see the name of Angharad Flower in the results of the Lausanne 10k road race in Switzerland but there she was.

In only her second race of the year the 19-year-old member of North Somerset AC ran a time of 42mins 35secs to finish 49th woman in the event and smash her previous best by 2mins 36secs.

In her only other race listed on the UKA Power of 10 Rankings Flower signed off her schools’ career with 255th place in the senior girls’ race at the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships.

A little closer to home Westbury Harriers’ Elizabeth Smith (pictured left receiving her prize) was top woman in the Shepton Mallet 10K road race.

Held in near perfect running conditions with the rain holding off and the temperatures working in the runners favour  Smith cantered to victory by 47 seconds in a time of 43mins 06secs.

The 33-year-old has run quicker than that this year with times of 40:08 in the Great Bristol 10k and 41:30 in the Bradley Stoke 10k. Her lifetime best remains the 38:08 she set five years ago when placing third in the Swindon 10k event.

Women: 1 Elizabeth Smith (WH) 43:06; 2 Rachel Astington (Langport) 43:53;

Men: 1 Owen Astington (Langport) 37:50; 2 Tom Dukes (Wells) 37:53; 3 Dylan Dukes (Wells) 39:29.
