OKAY not strictly an athletics story but couldn’t let the marriage of Steph Barnes got without a mention.
The Bristol & West athlete, a former winner of the Easy Runner/Post athlete of the month way back in time, tied the knot with her long-time partner Jean-pierre Weerts at Holbrook Manor over the weekend.
Weerts, from Belgium, was a top runner in his own right so the pair clearly have much in common and they have been based in Belgium for the past several years.
Barnes, who was brought up in Clevedon, hasn’t raced this year and only twice in 2020 but she has always been a class athlete. Indeed, back in 2004 she won a silver medal in the 3000m in the 3000m at the English Schools’ Championships, a superb achievement.
In a terrific career since then she has notched up PBs of 2:13.12 (800m), 4:14.37 (1500m), 9:15.58 (3000m), 16:01.78 (5000m) and 35:27.34 (10,000m) on the track.
On the road she has a PB of 33:48 for 10k, set just two years ago in France and 76:05 at the half marathon, also in 2019 in Holland.
Everyone at Easy Runner wishes her and Jean-Pierre the best for the future.
