The Team Bath AC runner (pictured left training in Norway) booked her place in the team after a superb third place in the trial race staged in the Lake District on Sunday.
“I was really pleased with my third place as I was unsure how I would go,” said Hilland.
“I had done a few uphill races only at home in Norway but they were only half the distance of the trials race and I knew I was up against some very strong girls in the trials.
“But I knew the top three would automatically get selected and there is also a fourth place available so I think I have done enough now.”
Hilland is understandably delighted to win her third senior GB vest on top of her junior vest she won as a teenager when she was a student at Bath High School living in the city.
Now, of course, Hilland is based in Norway and after a long break from the sport is enjoying a marvellous return and finally realising the potential she showed as a youngster.
A recent hamstring injury, which forced her to miss the London Marathon, had hampered her preparations but the fact that the Europeans this year is just an uphill race was a big help.
“Just racing uphill is obviously much better for my hamstring but it is getting a lot better anyway,” added Hilland.
“But that was definitely my best run of the year so far so I am really pleased.”
