THERE were certainly no boos for one of the most popular British athletes of recent times when Jo Pavey made a special visit to the podium at the World Championships over the weekend.
The Bristol & West AC life member got a deserved upgrade to bronze from the 2007 World Championships in Osaka following the ban handed down to Turkey’s Elvan Abeylegesse who later failed a drugs test.
American Kara Goucher, who shared the podium with Jo, was also up-graded to a silver medal at the ceremony held in the London Stadium.
“Thank you so much everyone for the support,” said Jo.
“It was a wonderful moment. Finally I feel like a World Bronze Medallist.”
One wonders how many more medals Jo was denied over the years when she was racing at her best. Sadly for the sport how many more of these ceremonies will be taking place over the coming decades?
Kara Goucher and Jo Pavey finally get their proper medals from 2007
