Dan’s delight as he is named in GB squad for World Championships

DAN Studley is today celebrating his first Great Britain vest.

The 26-year-old Bristol & West AC runner from Tytherington, south Gloucestershire, was named in the GB squad for the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia, Spain, later this month.

“I knew I was on the cusp of selection as I had done the qualifying time close to the deadline so ticked the box for good current form,” said Studley.

“But when the selectors meet in a room to discuss these things you don’t know what might happen so I was delighted when I found out I had made the team.

“It was stressful waiting but great news and I am delighted.”

Studley, who started his career at Westbury Harriers before later switching to Bristol & West, is included in a full 10-strong squad for the prestigious event that always attracts a top class field.

“As well as getting my first GB vest it should also be a great chance to improve upon my personal best as the course is quick and the field is sure to be world class,” added Studley, who is also a former winner of the Easy Runner/Bristol Post athlete of the month competition.

Team Leader Charlotte Fisher, who is a member of Taunton AC and coaches at the Somerset club, said: “We have chosen a full squad of ten for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia as we seek to achieve the highest possible placing in both the men’s and women’s team standings.

“The team is a mixture of some very experienced road runners and those who we believe have the potential to go on to enjoy successful careers.

“There is great competition among the team, as proven throughout the qualifying period and at the British Championships at the weekend. We enjoyed a great Championships two years ago in Cardiff and Valencia will act as a great test for all those selected.”

Studley secured his selection by running a PB of 64mins 23secs in Barcelona last month, well inside the qualifying standard of 65 minutes.

The time puts him eighth in the UK Rankings and quickest in the South West.
