LUKE Ball delivered a superb performance to win the junior boys’ high jump at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships today.
The 14-year-old Castle School, Thornbury, student (pictured above winning the South West Schols’ title) had travelled to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham as a red-hot favourite having been so dominant in the event this summer.
But being top of the UK Rankings guarantees nothing so Ball and his coach Jeremy Dale knew they still had to deliver when it mattered most.
That Ball achieved that underlined his character and temperament for the big occasion as he went two places better than his brilliant bronze on his debut last year and give Avon the perfect start to the two-day competition.
Ball cleared 1.87m for the gold, nine centimetres clear of Jamaal Darlington from London with Noor-Eldin Mahmoud third, also on 1.78m.
